Introduction: The $15,000 Mistake
Last year, a buyer from Germany found us after losing $15,000.
He had placed an order with a “factory” he found on Alibaba. The pricing was good. The communication was fast. They sent him a clean invoice and asked for 100% payment upfront via Western Union to a personal Hong Kong account.
Two weeks after he wired the money, the emails stopped. The WhatsApp number went dead. The Alibaba listing disappeared.
“I thought I did everything right,” he told me. “The website looked professional. They had product videos. The price wasn’t even suspiciously low.”
Here is the uncomfortable truth: most buyers do not lose money because the price was too good to be true. They lose money because they did not know which payment methods protect them and which ones do not.
After over a decade in this industry, I have processed thousands of international payments. This guide explains every major payment method from the manufacturer’s side—what each one costs, how much protection it gives you, and which red flags should make you walk away immediately.
Part 1: The Five Payment Methods, Ranked by Buyer Protection
1. Trade Assurance (Alibaba) — Highest Protection
How it works: You pay through Alibaba’s platform. Alibaba holds the funds until you confirm receipt. If the goods do not match the order, you file a dispute.
Protection level: ★★★★★
Pros:
- Factory does not receive your money until you confirm delivery
- Dispute resolution built into the platform
- No need to share sensitive banking details
Cons:
- Not all factories offer it
- Dispute process can be slow (4-6 weeks)
- Alibaba charges the factory a service fee, which may be priced into your quote
Who should use it: First-time buyers, orders under $5,000, buyers who have not verified the factory independently.
2. Letter of Credit (L/C) — Strong Protection, High Cost
How it works: Your bank guarantees payment to the factory’s bank upon presentation of shipping documents. The factory gets paid when they prove the goods have been shipped.
Protection level: ★★★★☆
Pros:
- Banks on both sides verify documents
- Factory only gets paid after shipping proof
- Industry standard for orders above $50,000
Cons:
- Bank fees are significant (1-3% of order value)
- Requires both buyer and seller to have corporate bank accounts
- Document-heavy process
Who should use it: Orders above $50,000, established importers with corporate banking relationships.
3. Wire Transfer (T/T) with Deposit-Balance Structure — Moderate Protection
How it works: You pay a deposit (typically 30%) to start production. The remaining 70% is paid against a copy of shipping documents—the Bill of Lading, Packing List, and Commercial Invoice—proving the goods have been produced and shipped.
Protection level: ★★★☆☆
Pros:
- Simple, widely accepted, no platform fees
- 70% held until you see proof of shipment
- Lowest transaction cost for the buyer
Cons:
- The 30% deposit is at risk if the factory is fraudulent
- Requires trust in the manufacturer
Who should use it: Buyers who have verified the factory (samples received, certifications confirmed, video calls completed).
AmorSerere standard terms: 30% deposit to begin production, 70% balance against shipping documents.
4. PayPal — Convenient but Limited
How it works: Standard online payment. PayPal offers buyer protection for physical goods not received or not as described.
Protection level: ★★★☆☆
Pros:
- Instant payment, no bank details needed
- Buyer protection covers non-delivery
Cons:
- High fees (4.4% + fixed fee) — the factory will factor this into pricing
- Most manufacturers do not accept PayPal for wholesale orders
- PayPal’s adult industry policy is inconsistent and accounts can be frozen
Who should use it: Sample orders only, or transactions under $500 where speed matters more than cost.
5. Western Union / Personal Bank Transfers — Zero Protection
How it works: You send money directly to an individual’s name or a personal bank account.
Protection level: ☆☆☆☆☆
Pros: None for the buyer.
Cons:
- Money is gone the moment you send it
- No dispute mechanism
- No shipping guarantee
- A legitimate factory will never ask you to pay into a personal account
Who should use it: No one. If a supplier asks for Western Union or payment to a personal name, end the conversation immediately. This is the single most reliable fraud indicator in international trade.
Part 2: How to Verify a Factory Before You Pay a Cent
Wire transfer (T/T) is the most common payment method used by serious buyers working with verified manufacturers. But how do you get to the point where you feel comfortable sending a 30% deposit?
Here is the verification checklist we recommend to every buyer before their first wire transfer:
| Verify This | How to Do It |
|---|---|
| Business License | Ask for a copy. Cross-reference the company name with the bank account name. They must match. |
| Factory Tour (Video) | Request a live video call walking through the production floor. Look for: machines actually running (not static displays), worker density matching the claimed scale, QC inspection stations with visible checklists, and the flow from raw material storage to finished goods. |
| Certification Documents | FDA registration number, CE test reports, ISO certificates. Ask for the originals, not screenshots. |
| Sample Order First | Never wire $10,000 for a bulk order without first receiving a sample. Pay for the sample via PayPal or Trade Assurance. |
| Bank Account Name Match | The beneficiary name on the wire transfer must match the company on the business license. Different name = walk away. |
At AmorSerere, we offer live video tours of our manufacturing facility before any payment is discussed. If a supplier refuses to show you their production floor, there is a reason—and that reason is never good.
Part 3: The Payment Methods We Accept, and Why
Every manufacturer has a preferred payment structure. Here is ours, and the reasoning behind each option:
| Method | When We Recommend It | Why |
|---|---|---|
| T/T (30/70) | Orders above $1,000 | Lowest cost, most common for verified buyers. Deposit covers raw material procurement. |
| Trade Assurance | First-time buyers under $5,000 | Maximum protection for both sides while trust is being built. |
| PayPal | Sample orders only | Fast, convenient, but the fees make it impractical for full production orders. |
| Letter of Credit | Orders above $50,000 | Standard for large-scale OEM/ODM projects. |
We do not accept Western Union or personal account transfers, and we never will. This is not because those methods are inconvenient. It is because a legitimate manufacturer has no reason to hide behind untraceable payment channels.
Part 4: Red Flags — When to Walk Away Immediately
If you encounter any of these during payment discussions, end the conversation. There are 2,000+ adult toy factories in China. You do not need to take risks with one that raises red flags.
🔴 Critical Red Flags
| Red Flag | Why It Is Dangerous |
|---|---|
| Payment to a personal name or personal account | No legitimate factory processes wholesale orders through personal banking. This is the #1 fraud indicator. |
| Western Union, MoneyGram, or cryptocurrency only | These are irreversible, untraceable payment methods. Used almost exclusively by scammers. |
| 100% upfront payment demanded, no deposit structure offered | A factory demanding full payment before production has either no working capital (risk of closure) or no intention of shipping. |
| Refusal to provide business license or bank account details | You are either dealing with a trading company pretending to be a factory, or a scam. |
| Prices 30-50% below market with urgent payment pressure | “We can only hold this price for 24 hours” combined with an unusually low quote is a classic bait-and-switch. |
| No samples available or extreme sample delays | If they cannot produce a sample in 2 weeks, they cannot produce a bulk order in 6. |
Conclusion: The Best Payment Protection Is a Verified Partner
Payment protection tools—Trade Assurance, Letters of Credit, T/T deposit structures—are important. But no financial instrument is a substitute for verifying who you are dealing with.
The German buyer I mentioned at the beginning? After losing 15,000,hefoundus.Beforeplacinghisfirstorder,hedidalivevideocall,receivedsamples,verifiedourcertifications,andcheckedourbusinesslicenseagainstourbankaccount.HisfirstT/Ttransferwas2,400. His second order was $18,000. He has been ordering quarterly ever since.
Take the time to verify before you pay. A few extra days of due diligence are far cheaper than the alternative.
